Heights and Pregnancy

We often get asked about how taking Heights might interact with your baby-making plans, so we’ve compiled this guide to take you through every stage of pregnancy, so you know you’re getting the nourishment you (and bump) might need.

During Preconception - for Women

Nutrition is important when you are trying for a baby, for two reasons.

Number one, poor nutrition is associated with a much lower chance of becoming pregnant in the first place with women who take supplements reducing their risk of ovulatory infertility by 41%.

Number two, when a woman becomes pregnant, the developing baby will consume the mother’s nutritional reserves to grow and develop, which means that not having enough key nutrients before pregnancy can have negative effects for both the mother and baby. 

  • Folic Acid

    The key nutrient that all women need to make sure they’re supplementing when they’re trying to conceive is folic acid. This is because deficiency in folate (from folic acid) can cause neural tube defects. Women who are trying to conceive are recommended to take 400mcg of folic acid per day. (**Heights contains 500mcg so you can rest assured that you are getting what you need.) 

     

  • Vitamin D

    Heights also contains vitamin D which is important for your bone health. When women are pregnant, low vitamin D levels can affect the bone health of the baby and the mother so topping up while you’re trying is always a good idea. 


  • Omega 3

    Most people in the UK don’t eat enough oily fish. The essential fatty acids in oily fish (EPA and DHA) are required for healthy brain and heart function. Omega 3 supplementation is also associated with improving female fertility. Heights sources omega 3 fatty acids from algae oil, which reduces the risk of contaminants that can be found in fish, which are harmful for developing babies. The guideline for the amount of omega 3 you should aim for when trying for a baby is the same as the general population - 280g of oily fish per week. Heights gives you the equivalent of 200g, so you’ll be well on your way! 


  • Iodine

    It is thought that around 77% of women of childbearing age in the UK are not getting enough dietary iodine which is associated with infertility. Don’t worry, Heights has your daily iodine requirements covered.


  • Iron

    Lastly, iron is a nutrient closely associated with fertility because it’s an important resource for egg development. This means if your iron reserve is low, your body reduces the chance of conceiving. Heights contains enough iron to support adequate intakes alongside a balanced diet, but if you are anaemic, it may not be enough to correct deficiency so speak to your doctor or another healthcare professional to make sure.

During Preconception - for Men

Men also need to think about their nutrition when they are trying for a baby. And with zinc, selenium, vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids all playing a role in sperm count, sperm quality and sperm motility, Heights is a great choice for men too.

During Pregnancy 

If you find out you are pregnant (congratulations!), it is important to stop taking Heights as vitamin A supplements are not recommended in pregnancy. We recommend switching to a multivitamin formulated for pregnancy instead during this time.

During Breastfeeding

If you decide to breastfeed, take a multivitamin designed for breastfeeding mothers and come back to Heights when your baby is weaned.
